LASIK is relatively new FDA approved procedure that treats nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The procedure utilizes two steps; first a partial thickness corneal "flap" is created with a microkeratome. Next, an excimer laser ablates the refractive error and the "flap" is repositioned. No sutures are required for this procedure.

LASEK is another newer procedure that evolved to avoid flap related complications altogether. In LASEK, the epithelium is removed in a sheet that is hinged similar to a LASIK flap. The excimer laser then applies the desired treatment and the epithelium is replaced. The comfort and visual rehabilitation is much better than with PRK, and the procedure is safer than LASIK.

Dr. Griswold began performing LASEK exclusively since October of 2000. “I feel that the safety of the procedure far out ways the 4-7 day post-op recovery period some people experience.” Dr. Griswold is currently using the Star S2 and S3 laser for his LASEK; but is in the process of bringing an Autonomous excimer laser to Tucson in the near future. “I feel the Autonomous laser is the best laser for the treatment of Hyperopia (farsightedness) and for higher degrees of astigmatism.” “Since there is no cutting of a flap involved, all the flap related complications that may occur with the LASIK procedure are eliminated.”

Since there is no suction ring applied to the eye the procedure is well suited to individuals with narrow palpebral fissures (deep-set eyes) and is a more comfortable procedure for the patient.” There is also some evidence that the occurrence of dry eye is greatly reduced, if not eliminated by this procedure. “It was originally thought that the severing of the corneal nerves with the LASIK keratome caused a “neurotrophic cornea” and dry eye. It is now known that the application of the suction ring destroys conjunctival goblet cells and may exacerbate dry eyes in LASIK treated patients. There is also mounting evidence that there is less glare, halos and nighttime visual disturbances that is reported with LASIK.

Dr. Griswold utilizes the Star S2 smooth scan laser by Visx* and the Moria CB microkeratome for his LASIK procedures. Pre-op measurements are critical for successful LASIK & LASEK outcomes. All of your pre-op and post-op visits are with Dr. Griswold himself, as he feels this helps to assure a successful outcome, as well as realistic expectations.

"Contrary to popular belief, LASIK is NOT a panacea. There are a wide range of refractive procedures that may be better suited for an individual patient, such as LASEK." "Remember, if the only tool you have is a hammer, the whole world starts to look a whole lot like a nail"!
