Dr. Griswold is pleased to add the BOTOX injection procedure to his practice for the FDA approved wrinkle improvement indication. Dr. Griswold has used BOTOX since 1993, but it has only recently been approved for wrinkle reduction by the FDA. What is BOTOX? How does BOTOX work? BOTOX causes the contracting muscles to relax, freshening the facial appearance and greatly reducing the appearance of most lines and wrinkles. The maximum effect of the injection is in two weeks but some improvement can usually be noted within a day or two. Can the treatment be repeated? Most definitely, in my experience the procedure becomes more effective when repeated. An analogy might be a crease in a piece of paper, even when unfolded the crease is still visible; but the longer the crease remains flat, the less noticeable it becomes.
Can you become resistant to BOTOX? It has been reported that in some cases, usually where massive doses have been administered for many years some people become less responsive to the treatment. This is believed to be caused by the formation of antibodies against the BOTOX. This has never been observed in my practice. There is also a BOTOX "Type B" that can be used if antibodies are formed. This is usually reserved for functional cases such as torticollis, and blepharospasm. Why does BOTOX have to be repeated? BOTOX lasts from 4-6 months for maximum effect. I have treated several patients for years, and they state, and the photos attest that even up to a year after treatment an improvement in facial appearance may be noted.
Are there any side effects to BOTOX use? There is usually a small amount of redness and tenderness at the site of injection that lasts for a day or two. But usually no bleeding or bruising. Remember, only about.2cc is injected through a 30 gauge (fine) needle. Many people do not even feel the needle at all! A GOOD side effect of BOTOX use is that many patients report fewer headaches for months after the injections. The reasons for this are not clearly known at the present time; however BOTOX IS used for treatment of migraine headaches. Please note
the unretouched photos one week prior and after BOTOX injection for a
typical forehead "frown line." This patient has been treated
at least 10 times, and has not needed an increase in dose or frequency
since 1993. I should know I am married to her! Griswold
